Illegal northern beaches e-bike boom prompts community call for action

Manly Daily/NT News: Teenagers are illegally modifying their e-bikes to hit dangerous speeds, as northern beaches MPs demand urgent action to protect the community.

About 80 per cent of e-bikes ridden by teens on the northern beaches have been illegally tampered with so they can hit speeds up to 50km/h, a community forum on e-bike safety has been told...

The forum was organised by the independent state MP for Pittwater, Jacqui Scruby, and the independent federal MP for Mackellar, Sophie Scamps, in response to growing community concern about reckless e-bike rider behaviour...

Ms Scruby said as well as an improved education to alert riders to their responsibilities and consequences of poor riding, regulators needed to look at mandatory speed limits for e-bikes on pedestrian paths.

She said she was receiving growing complaints from local pedestrians about e-bikes being ridden at speed on footpaths.
