Statement on Sydney Protests

Irrespective of political views, peaceful protest is a cornerstone of our democracy.

I, like the many constituents who have contacted me, some of whom were there, others who watched on TV or social media, am concerned at the level of force imposed by NSW Police on protestors.

The NSW government has restricted (but not banned) the right to protest, on the basis of needing calm and social cohesion. Maintaining this balance requires that both the policing approach and those protesting are respectful of each other, and the laws in place, including no March orders.

I have received correspondence from constituents who are not professional protestors. Some are elderly or vulnerable, for some this was their first protest. Others are seasoned peaceful protestors like members of the Knitting Nannas. All were shocked at the police response and felt unsafe as a result.

I am also concerned by reports that a 76-year-old Pittwater constituent was restrained on the ground by four police officers, and that the level of force used may not have been proportionate.

I join others in calling on the Minister for Police to undertake an immediate review of last night’s policing and ensure the situation experienced last night does not occur again. I also support calls for an independent review. The police must enforce the law but use reasonable force to do so.

We have trust in our institutions and respect for our police force and the Minister has the responsibility to ensure that trust isn’t eroded.

With the possibility of further protests, I urge both authorities and protest organisers to work together in good faith to ensure demonstrations remain peaceful and that everyone’s safety is protected.

We must also respect that the Jewish community continues to grieve the horrific anti-semitic jihadist attack on 14 December.
