I have heard from many in the community who are opposed to Transport for NSW’s speed limit reduction from 60kmph to 50kmph between Newport and Palm Beach on Barrenjoey Road.
The decision to reduce the speed limit was requested by the former Member for Pittwater Rory Amon two years ago. I was not part of this process.
I managed to secure two deferments of implementation while the decision was reviewed, but the reduction was rolled out from 28 August 2025, with a 4-week grace period on enforcement granted by TfNSW.
Speed limits in NSW are set against mandatory standards and are independently assessed. It is therefore very difficult to have them reversed. I have undertaken analysis of the NSW Speed Zone Standards and AusRoad Standards and believe that there is a strong argument for Newport Hill to remain 60km/hr. Please see my 6 page letter based on technical arguments, letter from TfNSW and Standards on my website.
My ongoing advocacy and focus of this petition is Newport Hill, including Questions on Notice to the Minister when Parliament resumes.
One of the technical principles is that roads should be 'self-explaining' and the community's opinion is important to support that as a community we feel Newport Hill should be 60km/hr. I will present the petition to the Minister when I meet her next sitting period.
I will continue to advocate for the decision to be reversed for Newport Hill, a six lane arterial road. If you would like to see this decision reversed please sign my petition so we can demonstrate how much community opposition there is to this policy. I will also email you updates on advocacy in this area.
