New Truck Needed for Duffys Forest as Fire Season Commences

Following the harrowing incident over the weekend, Ms Scruby has acknowledged RFS volunteers' brave efforts following multiple truck damages in Sydney's south-west, between Katanna Road and Minerva Road at Wedderburn.

Firefighting vehicles from Duffys Forest and Terrey Hills were unfortunately damaged in the bushfire near Campbelltown, when the planned hazard reduction took a turn and forced crews to retreat.

Ms Scruby has been in touch with affected RFS members and understands the Duffy's crew were all cleared from assessments performed by Ambulance teams.

“I am very grateful that no one was injured and would like to thank the RFS members for their service,” Ms Scruby said.

This incident comes just as the NSW Government is pushing for a stronger, more reliable firefighting fleet. Commencing on 1 July 2027, the Rural Fire Service’s mobile assets – commonly referred to as the “Red Fleet” – will transition from council ownership to the RFS.

The move is backed by an investment of $470 million over ten years and will provide greater oversight, consistent statewide standards, and improved vehicle reliability.

“It is great to see the NSW Government backing our firefighters, and standardising their processes, allowing the RFS to serve to the best of their ability,” Ms Scruby said.

An additional $106 million will be allocated over 4 years for critical maintenance and safety upgrades across the state.

“Following the incident over the weekend, this funding and support is more than necessary to ensure all RFS Brigades are equipped with everything they need to keep our community safe,” Ms Scruby concluded.

Over the coming months, councils will be engaged to support an orderly and practical transition while continuing to work in bushfire prevention and emergency management.
