The NSW Minister for Roads, Jenny Aitchison’s announcement that a construction contract has been awarded for the long-awaited Wakehurst Parkway upgrade is a significant step forward for a key Northern Beaches corridor, according to Jacqui Scruby MP.
The $85 million project will deliver targeted safety and congestion improvements, as well as initial flood mitigation works, with construction expected to begin later this year.
Ms Scruby said: “After decades of broken roads and promises we now have a contractor for Wakehurst Parkway and the green light and preparatory works underway for the $500,000,000 Mona Vale Road West upgrade project,” Ms Scruby said.
“Wakehurst Parkway is a critical link for Pittwater residents travelling to the city and hospital, and it’s encouraging to finally see progress after years of advocacy.
“Upgrading these major roads will be a gamechanger for Pittwater residents.”
Ms Scruby said locking in a contractor was an important milestone, but further work is needed across the broader network to keep pace with community needs.
“Council also needs to come to the table to deliver the additional flood mitigation works needed to reduce the frequency of closures, which can occur multiple times each year,” she said.
Latest update from TfNSW on Mona Vale Road Geotechnical Works
Ms Scruby highlighted the need to continue accelerating delivery, including maintaining pressure on the government to progress the Mona Vale Road West redevelopment, and is pleased that geotechnical work on the project is set to commence shortly and the timeline for contractor award has been brought forward to 2027, six months ahead of schedule.
Scruby calls for everyone to comment on intersections and transport woes through the Northern Beaches Network Review website map
Ms Scruby also encouraged residents to participate in the Northern Beaches Network Review.
“Our road and bus network isn’t where it needs to be. Despite improvements, cancellations and congestion are still hurting commuters, especially in peak periods.”
“We rely on the whole road and transport network, Pittwater residents know it better than anyone. If you commute, have your say on the Northern Beaches Network Review to ensure our intersections, corridors and bus suggestions inform our transport corridors.”
“We need to see better reliability across our bus network, fewer cancellations, and improved connections, particularly for afternoon commutes.”
