Action on illegal tobacconist and vape shops in Pittwater

The rapid spread of illegal tobacco and vape sales in NSW poses an urgent threat to public health, local safety and the well being of young people. Unregulated tobacconists are multiplying in local shopping strips near schools, surf clubs and playgrounds - selling unlicensed products that fuel organised crime and put children at risk. The government has recently announced a new licensing scheme, an inter-agency taskforce and, at the Federal level, the appointment of an Illicit Tobacco and E-cigarette (ITEC) Commissioner.

These are positive steps – but they don’t go far enough. I have been calling for immediate action including stronger zoning controls and real consequences for criminals profiting from illegal trade. The coalition will soon introduce a new Bill that will allow for short term closure orders, the termination of tenancies and criminal penalties for businesses found to be selling illegal tobacco products.

We the undersigned call on the Health Minister, Police Minister, Planning Minister and the Attorney General to take stronger action on illegal tobacconists in New South Wales.

We call for a commitment to reform planning rules to prevent vape and tobacco stores opening next to schools, parks and sporting fields.

We also call for stronger enforcement in Pittwater to ensure that illegal tobacconists are shut down – and stay shut down.
