REVIVE OUR LOCAL ECONOMIES: JACQUI SCRUBY MP CALLS ON GOVT TO ACT ON EMPTY SHOPS

Independent Pittwater MP Jacqui Scruby introduced a Notice of Motion in the NSW Parliament this week calling on the Government to urgently address the growing problem of empty shop fronts across suburban high streets.

Ms Scruby’s notice of motion recognises that rows of vacant commercial premises drag on local economies, put pressure on small businesses, reduce foot traffic, weaken community connection, make main streets feel less safe and welcoming.

Ms Scruby said, “Business after business are closing due to unaffordable rents or landlords who won’t rent. Residents and shop owners right across Pittwater who are frustrated to see empty shops sitting idle for months and even years.

Ms Scruby noted that it’s a vexed issue that Councils around NSW are grappling with with multiple factors contributing to the issues - favourable taxation and property valuation, out of town landlords and people shifting spending to online rather than shopping local.

“It’s time to stop ignoring this issue and do the work needed to support our villages.”

Ms Scruby is urging the NSW Government to explore and implement targeted measures to stimulate local high streets. “Sensible tax incentives and a fair but effective empty shop front levy on long-term vacancies with revenue raised through such a levy to be redirected to support small business initiatives and family cost-of-living relief.

“We need to stimulate our local economies. Filled shop fronts mean more customers, more local jobs and more reasons for people to come into our town centres and support local traders”.

If we bring our high streets back to life, it benefits local retailers, residents, and the vibrancy of our community.”
