We should celebrate democratic expression, not curb it.
With the election just days away, the Liberal Party has been caught out trying to mislead voters.
They have plastered my electorate and several others with signs that look eerily similar to official electoral commission signs in a last-ditch attempt to stop independents from winning.
The signs are misleading, undemocratic -- and we believe illegal.
To protect our precious democracy we're taking the Liberal Party to court, alleging the signs are in breach of section 180 of the Electoral Act 2017 (NSW) as they contain voting directions intended or likely to mislead or improperly interfere with an elector in or in relation to the casting of his or her vote.
To put it another way: we think they're trying to win this election by tricking voters into thinking they're the electoral commission.
They've done this before. Signs used by the Liberal Party in the 2019 federal election were later found to be unlawful as they interpreted the electoral commission.
This time we're not waiting until after the election.
We're heading to court in the next 24 hours to seek an injunction that puts an end to the Liberal Party's undemocratic attempt to mislead voters -- and we're asking for your help.
Can you donate to the Number Every Box Legal Fund so we can make this a fair fight?
This legal battle could determine whether independents win or lose in this Saturday's NSW state election. And it will set an important precedent that might stop these sorts of misleading signs from ever appearing in an election again.
It's a special moment in Australian election history, and we're inviting you to be a part of it.
There is no limit on how much you can donate, even if you have donated $3,300 to this campaign already this election, as legal fees fall outside the campaign spending cap.
Thank you for your support. And don't forget to number every box this Saturday.
